Master Student Needs Our Help

Dear Oregon Diabetes Educators

I am a graduate student at the University of Hawaii, Manoa working on my master thesis in Information & Computer Sciences. Dr. Luz Quiroga (http://www2.hawaii.edu/~lquiroga/) is the chairperson.

I have been working on my thesis for the past year and formed the committee about 6 months ago. The title of my thesis is: Using Social Networking to Encourage Improvement of Self-Monitoring Compliance for Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DM2). As you can already guess from the title, the purpose of the thesis is to investigate the use of social networking features (i.e. Facebook) to help improve Type-2 diabetic patients' motivation to comply to self-monitoring regimen (e.g. monitoring blood glucose).

I have reviewed literature in related to compliance, the acute-care model, the patient empowerment approach, other interventions that have been attempted to help patients manage their disease. My approach is to start with the patients - how to move those who are not motivated to at least consider changing their behaviors. As part of my data collection process, I would like to talk to experts in this field. I have talked to a number of diabetes educators in Hawaii but I would like to broaden my scope and talk to other diabetes educators around the country.

I would like to have a phone interview with any diabetes educators who are interested in the idea of utilizing social networking like Facebook to help diabetic patients comply to lifestyle-changing activities. The phone interview should last no longer than 30 minutes. Skype is also possible. In addition to the interview, I would also discuss some of the ideas that I will be proposing in my research. I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me to the right direction / people to discuss more.

Thank you very much for your help in advanced and I look forward to hear from you soon.

Aloha, William Yip Depart of Information and Compute Science University of Hawaii, Manoa
