Oregon Health & Science University has immediate opening for a Certified Diabetes Educator
The Certified Diabetes Educator functions as a caregiver in a multidisciplinary team to improve glucose control and clinical outcomes for patients with diabetes and/or hyperglycemia. S/he provides diabetes education to adult patients and their families during their hospitalization at OHSU. S/he works in collaboration with the Glycemic Team and individual nursing units to meet educational needs of patients related to their diagnosis, medication dosing and administration, blood glucose monitoring and other self care skills. S/he also consults with primary teams and Care Management to ensure patients have an identified plan for follow-up education and management post-discharge. S/he works in concert with the Certified Diabetes Educators in the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center to create/update patient education materials to meet the needs of our inpatient population. The Registered Nurse is expected to practice in accordance with professional nursing standards and core values. Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to service excellence are required.
The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, with a minimum of 2 years nursing experience in direct diabetes patient care and education in an acute care setting, within the last 5 years of employment. Candidates must demonstrate a strong working knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology and nutrition as it relates to diabetes management; knowledge and application of principles of Adult Learning Theory; and exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate positive and effective interpersonal relationships with members of the healthcare team, patients, families and others. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous experience caring for patients with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and who are Bi-lingual in Spanish. Current certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) preferred.

Description:
Educates patients, physicians, nurses, educators, and other health care professionals (HCP's) regarding the importance of intensive management of patients with diabetes using Medtronic Diabetes products. • Demonstrates products to new patients, consulting them on the therapy and helping to close the sale via "Kitchen Table" Discussions at patient homes. • Trains patients and health care professionals (HPC's) on Medtronic MiniMed's products, operations, and therapy. • Troubleshoots clinical and technical issues regarding Medtronic MiniMed products and therapy. • Assists HCP in assessing and managing patient’s therapy once the initiation process begins as needed to ensure a positive outcome. • Trains physicians and nurses (HCP's) on how to do adjust insulin regimens for CSII using standard Blood Glucose (BG) readings and sensor technology. • Consults and presents to individuals and groups on behalf of Medtronic Diabetes • Plans, organizes and manages assignments within allotted budget. • Travels in assigned territory on a regular basis and attends seminars, symposiums and special events as directed. • Recruits, manages and trains Medtronic Diabetes Certified Pump Trainers (CPT's) within their assigned territory, and helps manage CPT costs, • Communicates with other Medtronic Diabetes departments regarding field clinical/sales needs and issues. Becomes an integral part of the Sales Team.
